As we transition into a period of 4K, HDR gaming and a world where people love to stream games and watch others play, the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro need to be more capable than ever. Now though, it seems that there's almost everything to play for. Microsoft had ridden on the success of the Xbox 360 and grown fat on its rewards, launching a bloated console that came with so few of the features people actually wanted. Back in 2013, the PS4 was the most powerful console on the market, and it had managed to carve itself a nice piece of the gaming landscape again after the blunder that was Sony's handling of the PS3's early days. It's been well over four years since this current generation of consoles first appeared. But what does that actually mean for you as a gamer? Which device is best suited to your needs? Can Microsoft's reliance on sheer power actually translate into something enjoyable? Microsoft's Xbox One X is the world's most powerful console – a fact they love to throw around – and Sony's PS4 Pro is the most powerful PlayStation ever made – a fact that really means very little. If you want to see how ugly this gets, put a DVD into a bluray player, which grants a 480 > 1080 > 4k upscale path.The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro represent the very best that games consoles have to offer the world right now. One more thing to note: many 360 games were made in the 720-900 resolution, so if you think upscaling from 1080 is ugly, don't go too far back into that compatible library. That said, the game running on a powerful console is freaking awesome, with load times less than 10 seconds, as opposed to the 1min+ on the 360. But once I get moving and start focusing my eyes on "where I need to go", I don't really notice it much, until I stand still again. Using my own experience with Oblivion, it doesn't look good on a 4K television at all. But if you're playing an exploration game, for example, you may notice the "blurred" effect caused by the upscale. Most people are fine with it, because the motion of games is so fast, there's no real time to take in the view. This means YOU and ONLY YOU can make the determination if what you're seeing is acceptable. I won't get technical, but basically the system "guesses" at what a larger image would look like, and overcompensates that with aliasing (or intentional blurring). When a game isn't using textures for the resolution its designed for, several techniques are used to expand the image. This isn't anything like saying "well, 4k is 4x the clarity of 1080 so."
